Stock Contractor • Inducted 2024
Legend has it that third generation stock contractor Sammy Andrews took his first steps in the arena at the Fort Worth Coliseum. To say rodeo is in his blood would be an understatement. Andrews grew up on his father’s ranch doctoring cattle and breaking colts between chores of picking cotton and soybeans. He would travel with his father to eastern rodeos in Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Through this, he learned the ins and outs of rodeo producing.
Andrews tried his hand at bareback riding and bulldogging while in college. He also found he had an affinity for working as a pick-up man. In 1980, he began producing amateur rodeos. With encouragement from others in the business, he joined the PRCA in 1987. Andrews started by leasing bulls and horses to Mike Cervi and Harry Vold. Working with the two veterans helped get Andrews to the floor of the Thomas and Mack Center when his animals were selected for the 1989 National Finals Rodeo.
To grow his pens, Andrews visited many sale barns looking for the next bull or horse to make it big. That is where he found J31, better known as Bodacious. Under Andrews’ supervision, Bodacious grew into a powerful bucking bull that continues to have one of the biggest reputations in rodeo. Bodacious became one of the founders of the Andrews’ string of bulls, producing offspring Bo Dippin’ and Diddy Wa Diddy, both NFR bulls.
At the same time he got his PRCA card, Andrews revitalized his father’s horse breeding operation. Although he now focused on breeding bucking horses instead of ranch horses. His success with horses has been nearly the same as with bulls. The breeding program he started has now passed to his son and they continue to win awards.
Andrews was awarded with the 2002 Stock Contractor of the Year award and was voted as one of the Top Five PRCA Stock Contractors in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2014. Andrews has been inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2008.
